In an industry driven by relentless speed and mass production, Helena—a slow-fashion label founded by Nanda—stands out as a quiet, powerful revolution. Handcrafted out of a home studio in South Etobicoke, Helena exists to prove that high-end style doesn’t have to come at the expense of people, animals, or the planet. Rather than forcing new production, Nanda leads with discovery: sourcing high-grade deadstock, designer remnants, and forgotten vintage textiles—sometimes rescued directly from disposable bins—to craft one-of-one, timeless garments.
More than just a fashion label, Helena serves as a creative canvas for a deeply compassionate lifestyle. Built on Nanda’s 30-year journey of plant-based living, the brand bridges the worlds of sustainable fashion, animal rights advocacy, and conscious storytelling. By dressing changemakers, honoring unedited authenticity in its visual storytelling, and transforming discarded luxury fabrics into treasured heirlooms, Helena invites us to slow down, rethink our relationship with consumption, and find beauty in choosing kindness.

What is the fashion brand’s primary mission, and what are the daily ‘micro-actions’ the team takes to move closer to that goal?
Helena exists to prove that stylish clothing doesn’t have to come at the expense of people or the planet. Our mission is to create timeless, one-of-one garments from rescued textiles, giving exceptional materials a second life through thoughtful design and careful craftsmanship. We want people to fall in love with dressing up again, to choose pieces they will treasure and keep for years rather than replacing them.
Our work happens through small, intentional decisions every day. We source discarded vintage textiles and deadstock fabrics that still have so much life to give. We design around the character of each fabric instead of forcing a design upon it. Every garment is cut, sewn, and finished with love and care, by hand, in our home studio located in South Etobicoke.
We share the story behind our materials, encourage mindful consumption, and continue to look for new ways to rescue beautiful textiles that might otherwise be forgotten or destined for landfills. These daily choices may seem small on their own, but together they reflect the kind of fashion industry we believe is possible.
What are the most significant milestones or ‘traction points’ the fashion brand has achieved since its founding?
Since its founding, Helena has grown through meaningful relationships rather than rapid growth. One of our proudest milestones has been dressing changemakers, people whose work extends far beyond fashion. From animal rights advocates to individuals using their voice to create a more compassionate world, seeing Helena become part of their journey has been deeply rewarding.
We’ve also built a community that values craftsmanship, individuality, and thoughtful consumption. Each one of one piece that finds a new home represents another rescued textile given a second life, and another person choosing quality and longevity over disposability. Every collection, collaboration, and conversation has helped shape Helena into more than a label, it has become a reflection of the values we hope to see more of in the world.
What are the most persistent challenges the brand faces in today’s economic or social climate?
One of Helena’s greatest challenges is operating in an industry built around speed and a lack of quality standards. Creating one-of-one garments from rescued textiles is a slower, more thoughtful process that doesn’t follow the traditional fashion model. Every piece depends on the availability of exceptional materials, and no design can simply be reproduced once a fabric is gone.
There is also the ongoing challenge of helping people see the true value of craftsmanship. Handmade clothing with sustainable materials takes time, skill, and intention, yet fast fashion has conditioned many consumers to expect low prices and endless choice. Part of our work is gently shifting that perspective. Inviting people to appreciate fashion as something with a past, a story, made to be worn, loved, and kept for many, many years.

Reflecting on a recent program setback, what did it reveal about the team’s resilience or the organization’s adaptability?
Like many small independent businesses, we’ve had moments where plans didn’t unfold exactly as expected. Those experiences have reinforced the importance of staying adaptable without compromising our values. Rather than seeing setbacks as failures, we see them as opportunities to refine our approach, explore new ideas, and strengthen the foundation we’re building.
Working with rescued textiles has also taught us to embrace flexibility. Every fabric is different, every limitation invites creativity, and every challenge asks us to think differently. That mindset has become part of Helena’s identity.
What are 5 unique traits of your fashion brand?
- We never know exactly what the next collection will look like. Because we work with rescued textiles, each fabric shapes the design rather than the other way around. The process is led as much by discovery as it is by planning.
- No two pieces are ever the same. Once a piece finds its home, it’s gone for good. That sense of rarity is simply a natural result of the way we create.
- We have a habit of seeing possibility where others see waste. An old vintage tablecloth, a discarded fabric sample, or an overlooked textile can become the starting point for something beautiful. We have collected exceptional textiles directly from disposable bins multiple times.
- We believe clothing should have a story and distinctive quality. We spend as much time thinking about where a fabric has been as where it will go next, and that history becomes part of every piece we make.
- We take our time. In a culture that celebrates speed, Helena moves at its own pace. Every piece is made with so much love and intention, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
In an advocacy-heavy field, what core values keep the brand motivated during difficult seasons?
What keeps us grounded is the belief that small, thoughtful actions have lasting impact. Every textile we rescue, every piece we create, and every person who chooses to wear it is part of a quieter way of creating change. We don’t believe meaningful impact has to be loud to matter.
We’re also motivated by a deep respect for craftsmanship, resourcefulness, and the idea that beauty and responsibility can exist together. In challenging seasons, those values remind us why Helena exists. They encourage us to keep creating with love, responsibility, and care, to stay true to our principles, and to trust that thoughtful work will always find the people it is meant for.

In your communications, how does the brand ensure that the individual stories and personalities of the animals (or people) remain the focus, rather than just treating them as statistics?
We believe every being has a story, a personality, and a life that deserves to be recognized. We never want animals, people, or communities to become numbers used to represent a cause. Behind every movement are individuals with their own experiences, emotions, and journeys.
Through our collaborations with animal rights fundraising events and initiatives supporting human communities, we strive to honour the heart behind the work, the advocates who dedicate themselves to creating change, the organizations creating meaningful impact, and the lives being supported along the way. For us, fashion is a way to create community and connection. Each piece carries a story, and we hope to use that same storytelling to bring attention to compassion, kindness, and a more conscious way of living.

Who are the ‘unsung heroes’ within your brand—human or otherwise—whose contributions are vital but rarely seen by the public?
Some of our greatest heroes are the ones who often remain unseen: the hands, hearts, and stories behind every piece. They are the people who carefully preserve craftsmanship, the makers who dedicate their time and skill to creating something meaningful, and the individuals who choose to donate, rescue, or pass along materials that still hold beauty and possibility.
We also consider the advocates, volunteers, and community members who lovingly dedicate their time to animal rights, social causes, and creating a more compassionate world- our changemakers. Their work is often done without recognition, yet their commitment creates ripples far beyond what we see.
And perhaps the most unexpected heroes are the textiles themselves. Fabrics that were once overlooked or considered waste are given another chapter, becoming a new kind of fashion, one with a new meaning and purpose.
Beyond your primary mission, how does the brand encourage the public to practice compassion in their own daily lives?
We believe compassion is expressed not only through large actions but also through the small choices we make every day. The way we consume, the way we treat other beings, and the way we value what already exists all have an impact. Through our work, we encourage people to slow down, to be more intentional, and to recognize the beauty and potential in what is often overlooked. Choosing a one-of-one piece, supporting ethical creators, or simply questioning the habits we have been taught are all meaningful steps toward a more compassionate way of living.
We hope Helena inspires people to extend kindness beyond fashion to animals, to people, and to the planet. Compassion begins with awareness, and even the smallest choices can become part of a larger movement toward a more thoughtful and connected world.
How do you see the brand’s work connecting to other social justice or environmental movements?
We see fashion as deeply connected to the larger movements working toward a more compassionate and sustainable world. The way we create is rooted in the belief that our relationship with clothing, animals, people, and the planet is all interconnected.
By rescuing textiles and transforming them into one-of-one garments, we challenge the culture of disposability and support a more circular approach to fashion. But our work extends beyond materials; we collaborate with animal rights fundraising events, community initiatives, and organizations that share a vision of creating a kinder world.
We believe social justice and environmental movements are strengthened through connection. Whether it is advocating for animals, supporting communities, reducing waste, or encouraging more mindful choices, these movements share a common thread: recognizing the value of every life and protecting what is often overlooked.

Can you share a story of a time when the brand’s work inspired a ‘ripple effect’ of compassion in a supporter or a member of the community?
Through Helena, we have had the opportunity to collaborate with animal rights advocates, community organizers, and individuals who use their voices to create positive change. Seeing someone wear a piece made from rescued textiles while sharing the values behind it often opens conversations that go beyond fashion, into conscious choices, kindness, and our relationship with the world around us.
We have seen supporters become more curious about where their clothing comes from, more intentional about what they purchase, and more connected to causes that extend beyond themselves. A rescued piece of fabric becomes a reminder that what is overlooked can be valued again, and that small choices can create meaningful waves of change.
For us, the greatest ripple effect is when someone feels inspired to carry compassion into another area of their life, whether that means supporting a cause, choosing more thoughtfully, or simply seeing another living being with more empathy.
Living compassionately can be heavy work. How does the fashion brand model a sustainable, joyful version of veganism to the world?
At Helena, we believe compassion can be a source of joy, creativity, and connection. While the realities we advocate for can sometimes feel heavy, we believe the most lasting change is created through inspiration rather than fear. Living with compassion is also about celebrating what we are creating together. We believe a kinder future can be filled with beauty and joy.
Through our collaborations with compassionate communities, we hope to show that conscious living is not about limitation; it is about appreciating. It is about recognizing the value in what has been overlooked, honouring the lives around us, and making choices that reflect care and respect.
How central are volunteers to the daily operations, and what is the strategic process for someone looking to get involved?
Beyond textile rescue, volunteers also help bring Helena’s values into the community by participating in social events, conscious fashion gatherings, animal rights fundraisers, and initiatives that create meaningful connections between people and causes.
For those who want to get involved, the process begins with a shared belief in compassion, creativity, and a more intentional way of living. If someone has experience with textiles or simply wants to contribute their time and energy, we welcome people who are passionate about making a positive impact. Every contribution, no matter how small, becomes part of the larger story of transforming what was once forgotten into something meaningful.
If you could implement one major structural or operational change today to better serve the mission, what would it be?
If we could implement one major operational change today, it would be creating a stronger community-based system for textile rescue and collaboration. The demand for sustainable alternatives continues to grow, but countless beautiful fabrics are still being discarded simply because there is no organized pathway to preserve and transform them. Building a dedicated network of textile donors, volunteers, makers, and community partners would allow Helena to rescue more materials, create more opportunities for collaboration, and extend our impact beyond what we can currently do alone.
This would allow us to spend less energy searching for resources and more time focusing on what we do best: transforming forgotten materials into meaningful, beautifully crafted pieces while bringing people together around compassion, creativity, and conscious living. The goal would not be to grow faster; it would be to grow more intentionally, while staying connected to the values that shaped Helena from the beginning.
What is one surprising or lesser-known fact about the brand that would resonate with the public?
One of the lesser-known aspects of Helena is the extraordinary quality of the textiles we rescue. Many of the fabrics we work with are from renowned designer collections and premium commercial-grade sources, materials that were originally created with exceptional quality, craftsmanship, and value. These textiles often carry a level of beauty and refinement that would normally place them at a much higher price point. Through Helena, we are able to transform these overlooked treasures into unique, thoughtfully crafted pieces that allow more people to experience the beauty of exceptional materials.
Another aspect of Helena that often goes unnoticed is our commitment to authenticity in the way we present our work. Our professional photoshoots are captured in their raw form, without digital manipulation or retouching. We work with a photographer who shares our philosophy: that beauty does not need to be manufactured. Rather than relying on editing, great care is taken to capture each piece as it truly exists, using natural light, honest textures, and the quiet atmosphere of the moment.
What makes each piece so special is that the luxury was already there; it was simply waiting to be rediscovered. We are not creating value from something ordinary; we are revealing the value that was always present. Every Helena garment is an invitation to experience rare fabrics, intentional design, and timeless craftsmanship in a more accessible way, while giving extraordinary materials the life they deserve.
In what ways do you feel The Honest Whisper successfully amplifies the types of stories your brand cares about most?
The Honest Whisper aligns beautifully with the type of storytelling that Helena believes in, the kind that looks beyond the surface and brings attention to the stories, values, and individuals behind meaningful change. So much of what we do is rooted in uncovering what has been overlooked. Whether it is an old textile, a compassionate advocate, a community initiative, or a movement working toward a kinder world, we strongly believe every story has depth and deserves to be seen.
The Honest Whisper creates space for these stories to be shared with authenticity and intention. It helps amplify voices that may not always receive mainstream attention and reminds people that behind every cause are real experiences, passion, and purpose. For Helena, storytelling is an extension of our craft. Just as we give new life to beautiful materials, we believe sharing honest stories can give new awareness, appreciation, and connection to the people and movements shaping a more compassionate future.
Which of our previous features or articles resonated most with your team’s values? Was there one that felt particularly impactful for the movement?
Many people see fashion, animal rights, environmental responsibility, and social justice as separate movements, but we believe they are all connected through the choices we make and the values we uphold. The way we treat animals, the way we use resources, and the way we value the things around us all reflect our relationship with the world.
One of the things we hope people understand more deeply is that conscious fashion is not simply about creating something “sustainable.” It is about changing our relationship with what already exists. The textiles we rescue are often beautiful, high-quality materials that were never lacking value; they were simply overlooked. Through Helena, we give these materials another life while challenging the idea that something new must always be created to be meaningful.
After 30 years of living without eating animals, compassion has always been at the heart of my work. Helena is an extension of that belief: that every being, every resource, and every story has value. We hope to inspire people to look more closely, consume more thoughtfully, and recognize the beauty in choosing kindness.
