The Importance of Nickname Safety in the Activist Community

In 2016, I began activism by protesting at rib fests, roadside zoos, circuses, and rodeos. All of which occurred in my hometown or nearby. Our approach was always peaceful. I didn’t feel safe in my supposed “hometown”. Those in denial about animal suffering were unpredictable. They often made insulting or threatening remarks during protests, some of which I personally attended. I have seen & heard physical & verbal threats to peaceful protesters who want to create a positive change & liberate animals. Since a handful of these people knew me & often stalked me online, I felt I needed protection. This is why nickname safety for animal rights activists is so crucial.

LucyLooEllis: My Online Persona for Safety as an Activist

A form of self-defense I used was creating an online persona, LucyLooEllis, to enhance activist online persona safety and act as a safety barrier for my identity. So I made up the nickname LucyLooEllis (Lucy) on all my main online social media platforms. This made it slightly more difficult for a stalker/predator to harass me. It just put my mind at ease, and I felt safe enough to continue my activism. I had just started and was not ready to give up quite that easily. As the years went on, I moved to a city where I found rapid growth & motivation to help make more progress in animal rights activism. By creating this online persona, I was able to engage in discussions and share information about animal rights without the fear of personal repercussions, allowing me to focus my energy on advocating for the cause.

From Fear to Empowerment: Finding Courage in the Direct Action Everywhere Movement

One significant thing I found inspiring was the courage shown by Direct Action Everywhere during “open rescues” for animals in need. This was a new type of animal rights activism for me at the time. The shift toward open rescue identity disclosure meant individuals openly revealed their identities and were transparent about the footage they gathered. This was a huge growth in the animal rights movement, which has since seen landmark legal wins, including acquittals for DxE activists who used the right to rescue defense in court.

So, shouldn’t I be open/honest too & change my name back to Laura? I considered adding my real name to my social media profiles. However, I decided to keep my existing social media handles unchanged. It’s crucial to remember that some activists had to use nicknames to protect themselves while fighting for animal rights. Nickname safety for animal rights activists were essential at that time. They used these aliases to hide their legal names and ensure their safety. That is part of animal rights history and shows how difficult it was and how we have made progressive steps.
